3D Slicer Updates 2025 — What’s New
Each year brings new extensions and UI tweaks to Slicer. 2025 is no different — and this time, the focus is clearly on dentistry. I tested the latest build (5.6.x) for a month; here’s what actually matters.
Highlights of the 2025 Release
Top changes:
Improved CBCT import speed (~ 40 % faster)
New “Dental Planning” bundle in Extension Manager
Updated Python 3.12 interpreter (less crash-prone)
Dark theme finally default
Autosave now runs every 3 min instead of 10
Testing Results on My Machine
| Task | Old Version (5.4) | New 5.6 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| DICOM Import 1 GB | 65 s | 38 s | ≈ 40 % faster |
| Volume Rendering | Medium lag | Smooth | GPU optimized |
| Startup time | 32 s | 18 s | Quick boot |
Pretty impressive for open-source devs doing this for free.
How to Update Safely
Back up your “/AppData/Slicer” folder.
Download latest installer.
Uninstall old version (optional).
Run new build as Admin.
Reinstall extensions (one by one).
If something breaks, rename settings folder to reset defaults. Usually fixes weird UI bugs.
Pros / Cons
Pros
Noticeably faster load times
Dental modules bundled by default
Dark theme saves eyes
Cons
Old scripts may need editing
Some plugins still beta
Conclusion
The 2025 build feels like a polished release, not a lab experiment. If you skipped updates for a year or two, this is the time to upgrade. Worth it, honestly.
