Vatech EasyDent4

EasyDent (EasyDent4) is Vatech’s older dental imaging software for Windows. Clinics used it to capture, store and view panoramic, cephalometric, intraoral and CBCT images from Vatech X-ray units. Today it matters mostly to practices that still run a legacy Vatech system, and to anyone who has received an EasyDent-era disc or export.

To be clear about what exists: there is no Vatech product called “EasyDent Free Tools”. EasyDent4 is commercial software supplied with Vatech imaging systems. What costs the recipient nothing is the viewer that Vatech software writes to patient discs, so the fair description is shareware (conditionally free). Vatech America lists EasyDent4 and its 3D companion, Ez3D Plus, as no longer supported, and EzDent-i is the current replacement.

How dental teams use it

Exporting a CBCT scan for a referring dentist

1. Open the patient in EasyDent4 and select the CT image.
2. Choose File, CT Save As.
3. Pick “Zip Folder” (usually best for sending) or “Folder”, then choose the destination.
4. The volume is saved as DICOM files that any DICOM viewer can open.

Exporting a panoramic or ceph image

1. Open the image and use File, Save As.
2. Save to a folder or USB stick and send it with the referral.

Opening a Vatech disc you received

1. Insert the disc or USB stick and start the Simple Viewer launcher on it.
2. On newer Vatech discs, choose the full viewer (it needs a dedicated GPU; Vatech names an NVIDIA GeForce GT 720 or better) or Simple Viewer Lite, which handles plain DICOM on modest PCs.
3. If the launcher asks to install or upgrade the Ez3D Plus CD viewer, accept; it is needed to display the scan.
4. If nothing starts, open the DICOM files directly in a vendor-neutral viewer such as Weasis.

Migrating to EzDent-i

1. Make a verified backup of the EasyDent4 database and file server.
2. Have a certified IT consultant follow Vatech’s EasyDent4 to EzDent-i conversion guide.
3. Update the server, capture PC and every workstation to matching EzSeries versions.

Install and first run

• New installations: Vatech states it can no longer assist with new installations of this unsupported software. Changes to the capture PC or database server should be made with Vatech support, because a wrong install can cause data loss.
• Adding a workstation: check the version under Help, About on a working station and use the matching installer. Choose “For Basic, or CD Dicom Burning”, and untick File Server and DB Server on workstations.
• Connecting to the server: enter the DB Server IP and File Server IP when prompted, or edit Net.ini in the C:Easydent4 folder.
• Windows 8 or 10: every executable must run as administrator, and the on-screen keyboard may not work.
• Database server: the SQL Server engine used by EasyDent4 does not install on Windows 10 or on server editions after 2012.

Limitations

• End of support: Vatech tied this to the end of Windows 7 and the matching SQL Server versions in January 2020.
• No Windows 11 support, no macOS version and no mobile app.
• Running an unsupported operating system for patient data is a security and compliance risk; Vatech points IT teams to its guidance on keeping such systems HIPAA compliant.
• It is not free software, and it is built around Vatech devices and its own database rather than as a stand-alone viewer.

EasyDent4 vs alternatives

Vatech’s own successor, EzDent-i, is the supported path for clinics with Vatech hardware. To open EasyDent exports on any computer, use Weasis (free, Windows, macOS, Linux) or RadiAnt DICOM Viewer (shareware, Windows). Practices that use Open Dental for practice management can bridge it to EasyDent4 or EzDent-i.
