Free Dental CAD and 3D Model Software

This guide is for dental technicians, small labs, clinic IT staff and students searching for free dental CAD software. The honest short answer: there is no complete, fully free dental CAD for crowns and bridges on this list. The closest is Blender for Dental — Blender itself is free and open source, but the dental modules are paid, so it is shareware (conditionally free). Blue Sky Plan also lets you design crowns, dentures and splints for free inside the program, with paid exports for finished designs.

The genuinely free programs below cover everything around the restoration: repairing and slimming scans, printable models, bases and jigs, accuracy checks and clinic layouts. Most labs end up using two or three of them next to whatever dental CAD they design in. Commercial suites such as exocad DentalCAD are not free; see our Blender for Dental vs exocad comparison.

Blender for Dental: dental modules on a free 3D suite

Blender for Dental (B4D) adds dental menus to Blender through modules: Model Designer (required first), Crown & Bridge, Splint & Layers, Tray Designer, Denture Designer, Guide Designer, WaxUp and implant bar modules. You import an intraoral or model scan, design, and export STL for printing or milling, while Blender’s own sculpting, Boolean and remeshing tools stay available. Blender is free under the GPL and the B4D interface installer is free to download, but each dental module is bought separately; the vendor offers free digital samples and tutorials and does not describe a trial. B4D targets Blender 4.5 LTS, runs on Windows and macOS (no Linux), and the vendor claims an EU Class I listing. Plain Blender without B4D has no margin, insertion-axis or thickness tools. Pick B4D if you are comfortable in Blender and want to buy only the indications you need.

FreeCAD: no dental workbench, but excellent for lab parts

FreeCAD is free parametric 3D CAD under the LGPL. If you searched for a “FreeCAD dental workbench”: none exists. We checked the official Addon Manager catalogue and GitHub, and there is no dental add-on. What FreeCAD does well is precise, editable mechanical parts: model bases with pin holes, printer trays, scanner fixtures, holders and small lab equipment parts, with TechDraw drawings for the record. The Mesh workbench opens and repairs STL files. Limits: it is not built for organic shapes such as crowns and dentures, converting a dense scan to a solid can hang it, and it has no DICOM import. Pick it for anything you would dimension with calipers.

MeshLab: repair and slim down scans

MeshLab from ISTI-CNR in Italy is the standard free utility between the scanner and the CAD or slicer. It removes duplicate vertices and loose fragments, closes holes, decimates heavy scans with Quadric Edge Collapse, remeshes for even triangles and checks whether a model is watertight. It also computes Hausdorff distance between two meshes, and PyMeshLab lets IT staff script batch jobs. Limits: no dental tools, no DICOM import, a dated interface with technical parameters, and no general undo for filters — duplicate the layer before destructive steps. After moving a mesh, apply Freeze Current Matrix before export. Pick it whenever an STL is too big, full of holes or refuses to slice.

CloudCompare: measure how accurate a scan or print is

CloudCompare aligns two 3D datasets and measures the distance between them. Dental labs and researchers use it to compare a printed model with its source STL, two intraoral scans over time, or a milled part with its design: pick matching points such as cusp tips, refine with ICP, run Cloud/Mesh Dist and read the colour map and histogram. The lightweight ccViewer companion is also a good free STL viewer. Limits: no dental templates or reports, limited mesh repair compared with MeshLab, no DICOM reading, and an interface aimed at surveying and engineering users. Check units first — some scanners export metres, not millimetres. Pick it for trueness and precision checks.

LibreCAD: 2D only, for layouts and drawings

LibreCAD is free 2D CAD with native DXF. It has no 3D, no STL and no dental functions, so it is not dental CAD in the usual sense. It is useful for the practical drawings a clinic or lab needs: a treatment room or lab layout with chair footprints and clearances, a dimensioned drawing of a model tray or tool rack, or a DXF outline for a laser cutter. You can also open an equipment supplier’s installation DXF and copy footprints into your plan. Limits: limited DWG support and no parametric constraints. On Apple silicon, the 2.2.1.5 build had a known “is damaged” signing problem that the project reports fixed in later builds. Pick it for plans; pick FreeCAD for 3D parts.

How to choose

  1. Separate design from utility work. Crowns, bridges, splints and dentures need dental CAD: Blender for Dental, Blue Sky Plan’s design tools, or a commercial suite. Everything else on this page supports that work.
  2. Start with your problem file. Scan too heavy or full of holes: MeshLab. Need to prove a print fits its design: CloudCompare. Need a base, jig or holder with exact dimensions: FreeCAD. Need a room plan: LibreCAD.
  3. Check your operating system. Blender for Dental runs on Windows and macOS only, and Blue Sky Plan on Windows only. MeshLab, CloudCompare, FreeCAD and LibreCAD run on Windows, macOS and Linux.
  4. Keep the version chain stable. B4D modules expect Blender 4.5 LTS; launch dental work from the B4D interface, not from a newer Blender 5.x installed separately.
  5. If your STL comes from a CBCT, segment it first with the tools in our free dental implant planning and CBCT software guide, then clean it in MeshLab.
  6. Download only from official sites or GitHub releases. Repackaged installers on download portals are the most common source of trouble with free CAD tools.

FAQ

Is there free dental CAD software?

Not a complete one for crowns and bridges. Blender for Dental runs on free Blender but its dental modules are paid, and Blue Sky Plan lets you design for free but charges for finished exports; both are shareware (conditionally free). MeshLab, CloudCompare, FreeCAD and LibreCAD are fully free and handle scans, models, parts and drawings.

Is Blender for Dental free?

No. Blender is free and open source under the GPL, and the B4D interface is free to download, but the dental modules are sold individually. The vendor provides free digital samples and tutorial videos.

Is exocad DentalCAD free?

No. exocad DentalCAD is commercial software sold through exocad’s reseller and partner network, with a perpetual licence or a time-limited Flex License. exocad offers discounted student licences for approved universities, for non-commercial use only. Its free product is exocad webview, a viewer for STL, OBJ and PLY files.

Which dental CAD software can I download free?

Blender, FreeCAD, MeshLab, CloudCompare and LibreCAD are free downloads with no paid edition. The Blender for Dental interface and Blue Sky Plan are free to download, but their full dental output is paid.

What is a good free STL viewer for dental files?

MeshLab and CloudCompare’s ccViewer open STL, PLY and OBJ on Windows, macOS and Linux. exocad webview is a free browser and mobile viewer that needs no registration, which is handy for sending a design to a clinician.

Is there a FreeCAD dental workbench?

No. The official Addon Manager catalogue has no dental add-on. Dental users combine the Mesh, Part, Part Design and TechDraw workbenches for bases, jigs and drawings.
