3D Slicer STL Export: Print Dental Models
Exporting STL files from 3D Slicer sounds easy — and mostly it is. The first time I tried it, I messed up the scale and printed a jaw the size of a teacup. Lesson learned: always double-check units. Still, it’s one of the simplest parts of the workflow once you get the hang of it.
Preparing Models for Export
STL export in Slicer is hidden under “Segmentations” and “Export to Files.” Slightly confusing, but powerful once you figure out the toggles.
Before exporting, make sure:
Segmentation is finalized (no holes, smooth edges)
Units set to mm (otherwise prints look weird)
Segments visible in 3D View
Naming matches patient or case ID
My Shortcut Routine
I usually clean up stray voxels with “Scissors” tool and smooth with 3 iterations. Anything more starts blurring anatomical detail.
Export Workflow
Steps that actually work reliably:
Open “Segmentations” panel → click “Export.”
Choose “Models” and select format “STL.”
Set output folder (avoid spaces in path).
Click “Apply” — wait 5–15 seconds depending on file size.
Verify exported model by re-importing it.
| Step | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Export small jaw | ~10 s | Fast and clean |
| Full skull | ~45 s | Large file, may freeze |
| Complex implant guide | ~20 s | Smooth with caution |
Troubleshooting
If file won’t export, check segmentation type. Binary label maps don’t export directly — convert to surface first.
Comparison with Meshmixer
| Feature | 3D Slicer | Meshmixer | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Export speed | Medium | Fast | Meshmixer lighter |
| Accuracy | High | High | Both reliable |
| File cleanup | Basic | Advanced | Use both together |
| Cost | Free | Free | No excuses not to use |
Pros and Cons
Pros:
Accurate STL geometry
Free and open-source
Direct export from segmentation
Cons:
UI slightly confusing
No automatic mesh repair
Sometimes scaling issues
Conclusion
For 3D printing guides or prosthetics, Slicer’s STL export works fine. It’s not glamorous but dependable. Test with a few cases — after two or three, you’ll do it blindfolded.
