Planmeca Romexis Viewer is a free desktop program from Planmeca for opening Planmeca 2D and 3D dental images without the full Romexis software. It is meant for referring dentists, specialists, dental labs and patients who receive a CBCT scan, panoramic or intraoral X-ray from a clinic that uses Planmeca imaging.
Most people looking for a Romexis Viewer download have a disc or USB stick from a clinic, or need to open a Planmeca export on a Mac or Windows PC. What it does
- Opens Planmeca 2D images and 3D CBCT volumes exported from Planmeca Romexis.
- Explorer layout with axial, coronal and sagittal slices plus a rendered 3D view of the volume.
- Panoramic layout: builds a panoramic reconstruction along a curve drawn over the dental arch.
- Cross-sections layout: cross-sectional slices along that curve, with a tool for drawing the nerve canal.
- Length and angle measurements on the slice views.
- Slice thickness selection, brightness, contrast and histogram (grey level) adjustment.

Opening a CBCT scan received from another clinic
- Copy the whole folder from the disc or USB stick to a local drive. Reading a CBCT volume from an optical disc is slow.
- Keep the viewer and the image files together in the same folder, exactly as exported.
- Start the Windows or macOS version of the viewer from that folder.
- Pick the patient volume in the selector and scroll through the slices in the Explorer layout.
Checking the mandibular canal before a referral
- Switch to the Panoramic layout and check that the curve follows the arch.
- Open Cross-sections and move along the region of interest.
- Trace the canal with the nerve tool and measure from the crest to the canal.
- Treat the result as a review. Implant planning belongs in full planning software, such as the licensed Romexis 3D Implantology module.
Sending a scan with the viewer (Planmeca clinics)
- In Romexis, open the 3D image and choose Export.
- Select a single multi-frame DICOM file and tick the option to export the viewer with the image, or to burn the viewer and the image to CD.
- Use Anonymize if the recipient does not need patient details, and Export Cropped to send only the region of interest.
- Option names can differ slightly between Romexis versions.
Showing a patient their scan
Rotate the 3D view, switch on pseudo-colour and crop to the area being discussed. This is quicker than opening the full Romexis client at the chair.
Install and first run
- Windows: unpack the package to a local folder (do not run it from inside the ZIP) and start the Windows viewer. No installer or Romexis server is involved.
- macOS: unpack the package and open the Mac version of the viewer. If macOS blocks the first launch of an app from outside the App Store, Control-click it and choose Open, or allow it in System Settings, Privacy & Security.
- Hardware: Planmeca does not list separate requirements for the viewer. The Romexis 3D workstation requirements are a sensible guide for large volumes: an Intel Core i5 (6th generation) or Apple Silicon, at least 8 GB RAM (16–32 GB for large Planmeca Viso scans), and a dedicated GPU or Intel UHD 630 or better.
- Package size: the current public package is large (close to 0.9 GB), so allow time and disk space.
- Gotcha: if the viewer starts but shows no patient, it is usually not in the same folder as the exported image file.
Limitations
- Planmeca describes it as a viewer for Planmeca 2D and 3D images. For DICOM studies from other manufacturers, a vendor-neutral viewer is the safer choice.
- It has no implant planning, cephalometric analysis, CAD/CAM, smile design or segmentation. Those are licensed Romexis modules.
- No Linux build and no Android or iOS version. Planmeca’s mobile app, mRomexis, is a separate product for Romexis users.
- There is no public web version of the viewer. Planmeca’s Romexis Image Cloud is a sharing service for clinics that run Romexis.
