coDiagnostiX is dental implant planning and guided surgery software for clinicians and dental laboratories. It combines a patient’s CBCT or CT scan with an intraoral or model scan, lets you place implants from an integrated library of manufacturers, and designs surgical guides for 3D printing or milling. It is developed and manufactured by Dental Wings GmbH in Chemnitz, Germany, and sold by Straumann.
coDiagnostiX is commercial, so it is listed here as shareware (conditionally free). A free demo version is available after registration and must not be used for clinical cases. In selected countries there is also a free trial of the dongle-free licence. A coDiagnostiX download is offered on the official site; which version you may use clinically depends on your country.

What it does
- Imports DICOM data from CT and CBCT, and matches optical surface scans (intraoral or model scans) to the volume.
- AI Assistant for automated dataset preparation and anatomy visualisation. Version 10.9.3 added AI “Jaw Hole Filling” to improve the segmentation of jaw scans.
- Implant planning with an integrated library of implants, sleeves, abutments and scanbodies from most major manufacturers, limited to systems registered in your country.
- AI-supported tooth extraction workflow that removes teeth from surface scans, for immediate protocols. Version 10.8 automated virtual tooth extraction.
- Surgical guide design wizard: tooth-, gingiva-, bone- or pin-supported guides and combinations, palatal support, lateral fixation and stacked solutions for edentulous cases.
- Surgical protocols tied to the chosen implant and sleeve system, for example the iGuide sleeves supported in recent releases.
- Open interfaces to CAD software and 3D printers, and case sharing with CARES Visual for designing temporary restorations based on the plan.
- caseXchange for sharing plans with referring clinicians, colleagues or labs.
How dental teams use it
Planning a single implant
- Import the patient’s CBCT and the intraoral scan, then align the two datasets.
- Let the AI Assistant prepare the dataset, then check the anatomy, including the critical structures to avoid.
- Plan from the intended restoration (prosthetically driven planning), then place the implant from the library.
- Check its distance to neighbouring roots and critical structures in the cross-sections.
Designing a surgical guide
- Choose the guide type (tooth-, gingiva-, bone- or pin-supported) in the guide wizard.
- Pick the sleeve system that matches the surgical kit.
- Export the guide for in-house printing, or send it to a lab or production service.
Lab service for referring dentists
Labs receive DICOM and optical scans from clinicians, prepare the plan and the guide, share the plan with the clinician for approval via caseXchange, and then produce the guide.
Install and first run
- Demo: register on the official demo page to get the demo version for learning. It must not be used for clinical cases.
- Licensed version: boxed installations come on a USB drive with a hardware dongle. Run
setup.exe, finish the setup, then plug in the dongle, whose tip should light up blue. In selected countries, dongle-free licences are managed through the Straumann AXS platform and need a stable internet connection. - Requirements: x64 processor, at least 8 GB RAM, a graphics card with OpenGL 3.3 or higher, 16 GB of disk space for the installation plus at least 10 GB free before each start, and a display of at least 1680×1050 (1920×1080 recommended).
- Mac users: run it in Windows through Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion on an Intel Mac. M1 and M2 Macs are not supported.
- Gotcha: Windows 7 is no longer supported. Keep the Online Updater enabled; 10.9.8 installs a security update for the dongle authentication driver.
Limitations
- Not free: the demo cannot be used clinically, and clinical use needs a paid licence. Prices are not published.
- Regional availability: coDiagnostiX is regulated medical software, and version 10 is only available for clinical use where it has been registered. The download page asks you to select your country.
- Windows only; no native macOS or Apple Silicon support.
- The implant library shows only systems registered in your country.
- It is a planning tool, not a general DICOM viewer or archive.
coDiagnostiX vs alternatives
| Tool | Licence | Key difference |

| coDiagnostiX | Shareware (conditionally free) | Mature guided-surgery planning with a broad implant library and Straumann integration |
| Blue Sky Plan | Shareware (conditionally free) | Free to plan; exporting finished guides requires paid credits |
| Diagnocat | Shareware (conditionally free) | Cloud AI with an implant report and STL guide download |
| Materialise Mimics | Shareware (conditionally free) | CMF segmentation and 3D models rather than dental implant planning |
exoplan and RealGUIDE are other commercial implant planning packages that people often compare with coDiagnostiX. Test each with a demo on your own cases.
